Abstract

Introduction: the coexistence of cataract and glaucoma is very frequent in our daily practice as ophthalmologists. The combined surgery of cataract and glaucoma still generates great controversies regarding its results.
Objective
: to evaluate the behaviour of the postoperative evolution of the glaucoma and cataract surgery patients who attended the glaucoma consultation of the Celia Sánchez Manduley Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital, this research was carried out in the period from September-2014 to January -2016.
Method
: longitudinal descriptive study, the universe consisted of 16 patients and a total of 24 eyes, who underwent an initial superior trabeculectomy in a first time and in the period of 3 to 6 months later were operated on cataract.
Results
: 62.5 % had visual acuity equal to or less than 0.1, all operated improved their visual acuity, 83.4 % had moderate defects, 75 % did not need medical treatment and the most frequent complication was the inflammatory reaction (29.1 %).
Conclusions
: cataract surgery and combined glaucoma in two stages allows an improvement of the rapid visual acuity in all patients, reduces IOP and postoperative medication and presents a reduced number of intra- and postoperative complications.
