Abstract

Introduction: abnormal masses in the neck of children are a common finding in pediatrics. Its diverse origin and variable forms of presentation sometimes impose difficulties for diagnosis.
Objective: to determine the main characteristics of cervical masses of non-thyroid origin in a population of children with these lesions
Method: descriptive study in 298 patients by means of the following variables: age, sex, origin of the lesions and their location. Statistical methods included the summary study of frequencies, inter-variable association data and non-parametric tests.
Results: male sex prevailed (n = 192), age group 5-9 years (52.0 %), inflammatory masses (58.7 %) and location in the anterior triangle (83.5 %). The most common inflammatory masses were lymphadenitis, while thyroglossal duct cysts and Hodking lymphomas were among the congenital and neoplastic lymphomas, respectively.
Conclusions: the findings of the present study are consistent, in a general way, with the reports at an international level. The knowledge of the different origins and clinical features of these lesions are crucial for its correct diagnosis.
