Abstract

Introduction: lumbar disc herniation is a weird disease in adolescents. Its frequency varies between 0.8% and 3.8%, and occurs even in 5% of children under 16 years.
Objective: to identify the clinical-epidemiological and surgical characteristics of lumbar disc disease in patients under 30 years evaluated in the external Neurosurgery department at "Carlos Manuel de Céspedes" General University Hospital of Bayamo, Granma, during the period of January 1st , 2011 to December 31, 2013.
Method: an observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study was performed. We worked with a sample of 19 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study.
Results: the main results showed that the degenerative disc disease in young adults reached a greater frequency after 20 years, mostly reported in males and in rural origin.
Conclusions
: the majority of the cases were diagnosed a year after the onset of the symptoms, considered as a late diagnosis. In the group studied the largest number of cases fulfilled the criteria for surgical treatment at the moment of the diagnosis.
