Clinical characteristics and frequency of chronic complications in persons with Diabetes Mellitus type 2, in Granma province.

O t was carried out a descriptive transversal research with the first 300 diabetic patients, type 2, hospitalized in the Diabetics Care Center in Granma, in the period from October 2007-to May 2008, with the objective to develop a clinic characterization and know the frequency of chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. The first datum was obtained from the health histories from which there were obtained the following data: age, sex, race, address, and toxic habits, familiar antecedents of diabetes, the starting age and its manifestation, nutritional stage, hypertension and chronic complications of diabetes. It was found and increase of overweight and obese patients (72, 9%) as well as abdominal obesity (61.3%). Hypertension was presented in the 70% of the analyzed cases. The average age was of 55, 9 % years. A 48, 7% of the cases presented some kind of chronic diabetes complication. The diabetic polyneuropathy prevailed (29, 3%) followed by diabetic macroangiopathy (26,3%) and diabetic retinopathy (17.3%). Finally it can be said that the frequency of hypertension, overweight and obesity as well as the abdominal obesity in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 in our environment is high what may be an influence in the high incidence of chronic complications in these cases.
