Abstract

It was performed a retrospective- descriptive study for the hospitalized patients who used to smoke cigars and cigarettes at Manuel Fajardo Psychiatric Hospital during the years 2008-2009.The universe was made by 162 patients and the sample by 62 patients who were active smokers . Male sex prevailed, specially men who were 36-45 years old, with highschool degree and urban origin. According to the patients, the reasons why they smoked had to do with marital problems because it calmed down their nerves. The urban health area (Poli II) was the one that hospitalized the biggest amount of smokers and the applied strategies were succesful for a 93%.
