Abstract

Introduction: obesity is the most frequent nutritional disease in children and adolescents, the ascending behavior in both developed countries and in areas of poverty makes it a global epidemic.
Objective: to identify some risk factors related to obesity in patients from 1 to 18 years of age, residents of the popular council Francisco Vicente Aguilera of the Bayamo West policlínico in Bayamo, Granma.
Methods: an observational analytical case and control study was carried out that investigated the association between obesity and sociodemographic, environmental, nutritional and other risk factors related to the mother. We worked with 339 obese children. Theoretical and empirical methods were used and the odd ratio was calculated.
Results: male sex (p = 0.0017), maternal overweight (p = 0.0034), inadequate feeding practices during lactation (OR = 5.641071, p = 0.0000) and unhealthy family eating habits were found (p = 0.0017), OR = 1.440117, p = 0.0369) contributed to the risk of obesity in childhood. The average daily time dedicated to sedentary activities and the maternal overprotection of the patient, did not have significant statistical relationship. The adequate perception of the mother or guardian about the nutritional status of the child was a protective factor against the risk of obesity at these ages (OR = 0.716992).
Conclusions: the results obtained warn about the preventive possibilities that may be viable to reduce the incidence of the entity.
