Abstract

A study of the chemical composition was performed to evaluate the antimicrobial action of the extracts obtained from the leaves of Jatropha aethiopica (Chaya). 20% Tincture presented quality parameters specified in the Cuban standards. There were developed successive extractions starting from the tincture with solvents of increasing polarity (hexane, chloroform, water and ethyl acetate) to identify the secondary metabolites that are presented. Microbiological tests ¨in vitro¨ presented antibacterial hexanic activity, chloroformic extracts and antifungal activity of ethyl acetate extract, produced from the dye against strains of Staphylococcus aureus, e. coli and Candida sp. All biological results were compared with antibiotics models corroborating the positive effectiveness of the evaluated extracts.
