Abstract

With the aim of evaluating the antimicrobial activity in vitro of natural extracts of the leaves and stems of wonder (Mirabilis jalapa l.), it was performed a research in the Center of Study of Applied Chemistry of the University of Granma and in the Microbiology Laboratory at Celia Sánchez Manduley Hospital. For that purpose it was applied a phytochemical screening using simple techniques in order to identify the main metabolites with possible antimicrobial effect. The antimicrobial activity of the products obtained was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer method. The dry, clorophormic, hexanic and ethyl acetate extracts presented activity to 20%. It was also determined by chromatography of thin skin that the extracts contained: quinones, coumarins and flavonoids. These results permitted to check the variability of chemical compounds, which justifies its use in a traditional way by the population.
