Abstract

The maternal breastfeeding is the feeding with the mother’s milk. It was performed an intervention study to 302 pregnants at Jimmy Hirtzel Polyclinic, which pregnancies were recruited during the year 2012, with the objective to determine knowledge, attitudes,  motivations and practices about maternal breastfeeding connected to an educational  intervention. It was performed an evaluative examination of knowledge, attitudes and motivations on the maternal breastfeeding, it was applied an educative strategy and there were evaluated the knowledge, motivations and attitudes comparing them with the initial results, it was finally determined the duration of the exclusive maternal breastfeeding. It was applied the Chi square test for the samples related with the level of significance (alpha=0.05). It was concluded that: before the intervention, pregnants with regular evaluation prevailed (137), 33, 1% of the new mothers had poor motivation to suckle, 28.5% kept an indifferent attitude to the breastfeeding. After the intervention, 100% had acquired good knowledge, a suitable attitude and a better motivation about the maternal breastfeeding. After determining the duration of the exclusive maternal breastfeeding, 100% of the mothers breastfed their babies until the 3 months, the 95.36 of them, until 4 months; the 92.72, until 5 months and the 90.07 until the 6 months.
