Abstract

A longitudinal descriptive study was performed in order to determine the prevalence of blindness at "René Vallejo Ortiz" Polyclinic in Bayamo and to know the different epidemiological aspects of this disease. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, Personal Pathological Antecedents (PPA), most associated general diseases, cause, psychosocial affectations of these patients if they were associated with ANCI. After analyzing the results it was found a prevalence rate of blindness about 84.8x100.000 inhabitants, mainly affecting the male patients over 60 years, identifying the acquired blindness. 100% of patients had limitations from the psychosocial point of view, essentially the literacy and emotional imbalance, and it was also identified that less than 50% of patients were associated with the ANCI, that is why it was recommended to structure and implement an intervention program for rehabilitation of blind patients in the community, based on the obtained results.
