Abstract

Introduction: the World Health Organization has identified the excessive use of the internet and mobile phones as a growing public health problem. This intensive use has led to the emergence of nomophobia.

Objective: to characterize nomophobia and its neurocognitive consequences in medical sciences students.

Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. Population: students aged 20 to 24 years studying Medicine and Nursing at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Manzanillo; non-probability, sequential convenience sample (n = 160). The Spanish-language version of the Nomophobia Scale (NMP-Q), composed of 20 items, was used.

Results: a mild level of nomophobia was identified in 70.6% of students, a moderate level in 13.1%, and only 6.8% showed no nomophobia. These results were very similar for both types of students. Learning difficulties were observed in more than half of the study population.

Conclusions: these findings reveal a problem of mobile phone abuse affecting the majority of the student population in this study, demonstrating various neurocognitive alterations in adolescents and young adults. Further research is suggested, as well as personalized attention for affected students.
