Artificial intelligence. Challenges for health teachers

Abstract

Introduction: artificial intelligence is transforming university teaching; today, the integration of these technologies into university teaching environments constitutes a challenge.

Objective: to assess the degree of acceptance and opinions on artificial intelligence and its use in the Dominican Health faculty.

Methods: an action research study was conducted during the period from January to July 2025, covering the 3 health areas and all teachers in the sector (80) after informed consent and a survey was applied to determine their knowledge and opinions about artificial intelligence, in addition a review of the course programs and study plans developed for undergraduate and postgraduate education was carried out to determine the degree of use of artificial intelligence in educational activities.

Results: the faculty is predominantly composed of professionals from the Millennial and Generation X digital generations, and 68.75 % are female. 70 % are physicians, and 52.50 % hold the position of Assistant Professor. In 73.75 % of the faculty demonstrated insufficient knowledge about Artificial Intelligence and its uses in teaching; after the intervention, 71.25 % of the faculty accepted Artificial Intelligence. Conclusions: implementing initiatives focused on Artificial Intelligence and its use in teaching activities positively impacted its acceptance and encouraged faculty members to participate in postgraduate courses and workshops to acquire the skills necessary for integrating Artificial Intelligence into the region's educational processes.
