Abstract

Introduction: problem-based learning (PBL) offers far more than traditional teaching methods, combining knowledge acquisition with skills development. The implementation of Plan E in the Medicine program highlights the importance of employing diverse active teaching methods that foster dynamic and direct student participation. Problem-based learning is also a tool that enables formative research throughout any subject.

Objective: to identify the theoretical and methodological frameworks that support problem-based learning as a tool for formative research in the Ophthalmology course. Methods: a bibliographic review was conducted in Medline, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCO, and ScienceDirect databases, prioritizing articles from the last 5 years in Spanish and English.

Results: the foundations of problem-based learning, its historical evolution, its relationship with formative research, and its applicability in medical education, particularly in short-duration clinical subjects such as Ophthalmology, were analyzed. The roles of the teacher and the student, as well as the methodological stages for its implementation, were identified.

Conclusions: the literature reviewed demonstrates the importance of problem-based learning in the training of future professionals and its usefulness as a tool for conducting formative research in various subjects. Its implementation favors the acquisition of fundamental skills for professional activity and fulfills the principles of formative research.
