Abstract

In recent decades, the application of medicine to sports has undergone significant research-driven evolution, transforming competitive and high-performance sports into truly scientific endeavors—encompassing biochemical, biomechanical, nutritional, psychological, and biopsychophysiological training analyses, as well as injury rehabilitation therapy. Given this context, competitive and high-performance "Sports Training" requires a solid understanding of sports medicine principles; however, such training is currently lacking in the postgraduate programs of Ecuadorian universities. A specific case is the Technical University of Ambato (UTA), specifically the Faculty of Human Sciences and Education’s Sports Training program, where a need has been identified to strengthen theoretical and practical knowledge in areas such as sports medicine, competitive sports psychology, sports nutrition, the physiology of sports training, and physiotherapy for elite athletes. These factors were identified through empirical research using a ten-question survey administered to postgraduate Sports Training students (2025–2026 academic cycle) at UTA and to competitive coaches from the Tungurahua Sports Federation (FDT) to assess their level of knowledge regarding fundamental sports-medical concepts. The results indicate that competitive coaches possess greater knowledge of sports-medical elements overall; however, certain areas such as sports psychology are more prominent among the students. The study concludes that both groups lack sufficient knowledge regarding sports medicine within the context of planning competitive sports training.
