Abstract

The terms "addictive" or "addiction-related" are widely used in everyday language today, often without accurately reflecting their true meaning. A descriptive, cross-sectional study with a mixed-methods approach was conducted in families with adolescents diagnosed with substance use disorders, belonging to Popular Council #5 in Manzanillo. The sample consisted of 19 families with at least one adolescent with substance addiction within the household, during the period from March to August 2025. As the primary source of data collection, research techniques such as interviews and surveys were used. These were designed by the authors and administered by previously trained personnel, with the aim of identifying the main perceptions and consequences of adolescent substance use, as well as the family environment approach. Absolute numbers and percentages were used as statistical measures, in addition to non-probabilistic sampling. Variables such as family perception and relational and emotional repercussions were analyzed. Regarding the results obtained, most families recognized addiction as a health problem; however, adolescent stigmatization within the community was also frequently identified. In the emotional domain, anxiety and stress were the most commonly reported manifestations, while in relational dynamics an increase in intrafamilial conflicts was observed. Based on the diagnostic findings, the implementation of educational intervention programs is recommended to support guidance and prevention of adolescent addiction.
