Characterization of patients with gastroesophageal reflux

Abstract

Introduction: gastroesophageal reflux disease is defined as the clinical situation that occurs as a result of the retrograde step of the gastric content into the esophagus, causing symptoms, signs and complications, with a great prevalence.
Objective: to characterize the patients with gastroesophageal reflux.
Method: it was performed a transversal study in patients with diagnostic gastroesophageal reflux attended in the Gastroenterology consultation at Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital in Bayamo during the period November 2010-l December 31, 2012. It was used the simple sample taken at random.
Results:240 patients were studied, the average age was about 36,5 years, 58,3% belonged to the female sex, the 52,1 % of the patients presented some type of mucous lesion detected in the endoscopy, these went significantly greater in the bebedores and smokers.
Conclusions: the illness by backflow gastroesofágico has a greater prevalencia in patient smokers, bebedores usual and obese, although the hernia hiatal can be present.
