Characterization of hip fracture in geriatric patients, January 2012- may 2013

Abstract

Introduction: the hip fracture in geriatric patients is a problem that increases because of the population aging in Cuba.
Objective: to characterize the hip fracture in the geriatric patient.
Method: descriptive transversal study since January of the 2012 until May of the 2013, the universe was made by 142 operated patients for hip fracture that were assisted in the duty guard service at Carlos Manuel de Céspedes hospital. The variables studied were: age, sex, form and place of the event and health condition at the time of the hospitalization. The information was obtained from the medical records, interviews to the patients and to their relatives or carers. The summary measures were the absolute numbers and the percentage.
Results: ninety-one patients (64, 2%) presented hip fracture and they were between the 75 and 89 years old, with a predominance of the female sex (n= 106; 74, 6%). Among the personal pathological antecedents the most frequent were the osteoarthritis with 28 cases (19.7%), hypertension with 17 cases (11.9%) and  osteoporosis with 9 cases (6.3 3 %). The most frequent place of the accidents was the house with 123 cases (86, 6%) and the way of the accident was due to the architectural barriers in 106 patients (74.6%).
Conclusions
: the most affected group was the one between 75-89 years in females with osteoarthritis. The falls inside their own homes and the architectural barriers were the prevailing places and way of the accident.
