Abstract

It was performed a descriptive, prospective research of all children from 0 to 11months and 29 days from  10  medical  consults located in two adapted places, El Golfo and Artex, belonging to Jimmy Hirtzel policlinic, who presented diarrheal manifestations.  The nurses, doctors and mothers of the infants were interviewed with the objective to identify if they used oral rehydration salts at the beginning of the diarrheal episodes. From the 80 newborns, 32 presented acute diarrheal manifestations, which represented the 40%, and only two of them used ORS at the beginning, the rest used them just before taking the baby to the doctor, to get 93.75%. All of them were hospitalized at home, mantaining the exclusive breastfeeding or feeding according to their ablactation schedule. Clinically, 28 cases were considered like viral liquid diarrhea (87.5%), two (6.25%) like bacterial diarrhea, and two more parasitary cases with 6.25% . None of them presented dehydration in the first medical consult and the evolution was satisfactory in 93.75 % of cases. One of them recovered from a persistent diarrhea (3.12%).
