Suicide attempt and family functioning in elderly people.

Abstract

This research responds to a methodologic, epidemiologic, descriptive,  and transversal design with the purpose to determine the level of suicide attempt in elder people and the type of family functioning that they had. The work was based on a population of 1263 elder people from both sexes who lived in the popular councils 5 and 14 belonging to the Teaching Policlinic Francisca Rivero Arocha in Manzanillo, during the year 2010. There was selected a sample of 74 elder patients what represents the 68.51% through a sample design with random selection and the random method, the stratification factor was the Family Medical Doctor´s Office, the proportional affix was the 10% of the population. The instruments used were: risk attempt scale in elderly people (made by the tutors), and the perception test for family functioning FF-SIL. As conclusion we can say that there is a prevalence of males older than 70 years, classified as fragile persons, being evaluated in the high risk level 11 elder people, the mid level was 34 and the low level was 29, what was a part of the families with moderated and disfunctional performance.
