Abstract

Introduction: atrial myxomas represent the most frequent cardiac tumors, they are infrequent but cause a high percentage of systemic and embolic complications. Surgery is the only possible therapy and recurrence occurs in up to 5% of operated patients. In order to illustrate echocardiographically and explain the possible causes of recurrence, the present clinical case is described.

Case presentation: a 53-year-old woman surgically treated for a left atrial myxoma in 2008 and asymptomatic recurrence of the tumor was confirmed 7 years later; We also report a 48-year-old man who presented precordial pain syndrome diagnosed giant left atrial myxoma and after surgical treatment his evolution is satisfactory.

Discussion: the most frequent clinical forms of presentation are syncopal episodes of short duration, cardiac arrhythmias, pulmonary edema and symptoms of low cardiac output.
Conclusions: Transthoracic echocardiography represents a fundamental tool for early diagnosis and tumor recurrence.
