Lichtenstein hernioplasty in the treatment of inguinal hernia. Our experience
Abstract
Introduction: the inguinal herniorrhaphies still are one of the most common procedures for the general surgeon, although the real incidence of this problem is not known with accuracy, not even in developed countries.
Objective: to characterize the behaviour of patients with inguinal hernia diagnosis treated with Lichtenstein technique in the Integral Health Centre ¨María Genoveva Guerrero Ramos¨, Montalbán, Metropolitan District of Caracas, in Venezuela.
Method: descriptive, prospective and transversal study in patients with inguinal hernia and the Lichtenstein technique was applied to them since September 1st, 2007 until December 29 of 2011. The variables were: age, sex, type of hernia according to the classification of Nyhus, location and way of presentation, associated diseases, complications and relapse.
Results: the male sex prevailed (321 patients, 93. 3 %); the majority of the operated patients were between 50 and 69 years (144, 41.86%). The Nyhus stage was presented in 170 patients, 49. 4% were the most diagnosed. The right inguinal hernia was presented in 170 patients for 49.4% and in 30(8.7%) of them, it appeared associated to other hernias. The associated diseases appeared in 81 patients, (23. 54%), 3 patients (0.87%) presented at least a complication and the relapses were found in 6 patients for 1.74%. Conclusions: the presence of the disease in males between 50 and 69 years for both sexes, and the application of the technique, with a relapse superior to the one reported by other series.
