Abstract

An observational descriptive study was carried out to know the behaviour of adolescents smoking from 12 to 15 year’s old belonging to Mariano Tamayo secondary scribal in Bayamo, Granma during January-March period 2007. 150 adolescents were selected using a sample taken at random it was applied an auto supplied, organized and anonymous questionnaire that included questions about presence and age of the beginning of habit, sex, initial motivation and searching support for abandoning this bad habit. There were used a summary measures absolute and relatives frequency distributions.

Results: From 150 surveyed adolescents 59(39,370) smoked, the majority of the smoker students had begun with this habit since 11 and 12 years old an 7 of them (4,7%) had started to smoke before 11 years. Mall sex was softly predominant with80 smokers (53,5%). The

Main motivations That they referred were the following to imitate a friend or adult 62 (41,3%) and to reaffirm their independence, 59(39,3%) 116 students (77,3) considered that it was not necessary to look for help to abandon this bad habit  o 27(18%)  said that they could do it by themselves, expressed their desire of abandoning it although they didn’t know how to do it and only one student looked for help. Conclusions the prevalence of smoking in the students from the experiment justifies the development of action to identify and promote the sawing factors that auld bring about the non- stimulation of toxic habits practice.
